The Trump call

Donald Trump in Oval Office

Senior College academics have provided comment to major American media outlets on the implications of the leaked telephone conversation between Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and President Donald Trump for Australia-US relations.

The Washington Post has followed up its explosive revelation of the leaked conversation with analysis on why ‘standing up’ to Trump could be a good thing for the Australian Prime Minister. The New York Times has quoted Head of College Rory Medcalf on how the conversation fits a pattern of behaviour by Trump which has strained alliances and partnerships on issues such as refugees, Iran and the TPP.

The Washington Examiner has highlighted the extent of the dismay on both sides of the Pacific about the leak and it potential to bolster Chinese influence in the region. And the Wall Street Journal spoke with Associate Professor Michael Clarke to explore the potential effects of the dispute on a number of security, political and economic dimensions of the relationship between the two countries.
