Andrea Soriano

Andrea (Andy) R Soriano commenced her PhD study at the NSC in January 2015. She holds a BA with Honours from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and a Master’s in Political Communications Management from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). Andy has held electoral advisory roles in the United Nations Peacekeeping Missions in Timor-Leste, Sudan and South Sudan, where she lived for several years. She was also involved in the development of a Timorese NGO in the area of government staff education.

During 2011 and 2013, Andy worked for the Embassy of Mexico in Australia as an executive advisor to Her Excellency Beatriz Lopez Gargallo, the former Ambassador of Mexico to Australia. She has travelled widely and visited many of the world’s hot spots, including Uganda, Lebanon, Syria, and Bosnia & Herzegovina.

Research interests

Andy’s main research interests include: Timor-Leste; UN peacekeeping missions; democratic processes in South East Asia; and the colonial period in South East Asia.

Thesis topic

Andy’s thesis work at the NSC is on traditional democracy in Timor-Leste as a stabilising factor. Her focus is on the compilation of primary source materials that explain the traditional Timorese concept of “democracy” and how this core value has opened a path for the country’s stability.
