This one-day program on nuclear stewardship is designed to provide an understanding of nuclear technology, Australia’s commitment to international nuclear safety standards and the challenges ahead.

Hosted by the ANU National Security College and the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO), this program will provide an overview of Australia’s nuclear baseline by ANSTO, highlighting our current capabilities and responsibilities. ANSTO educators will explain the fundamentals of radiation and nuclear science, crucial for understanding safety protocols. A session on radioactive waste management will address safe disposal practices, vital for environmental protection. ANU will discuss nuclear reactors for propulsion and power, focusing on their distinctive characteristics and safe operation. The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) will cover regulatory frameworks ensuring compliance with international standards. The Australian Safeguards and Non-Proliferation Office (ASNO) will discuss nuclear safeguards and the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, commonly known as the NPT, underscoring Australia’s role in global non-proliferation efforts. The day concludes with a panel on education, workforce, and social license, essential for sustaining a safe and informed nuclear industry.

Policy makers and other stakeholders should attend this course to deepen their understanding of nuclear safety, enhance their professional knowledge, and contribute to Australia’s leadership in global nuclear stewardship.
