It focuses on how regional actors are responding to China’s rise, how competition for influence is evolving and what challenges this poses for regional cohesion. During this course participants will consider, among other topics, whether Southeast Asia is shifting towards a more China-centric order; how regional states and institutions—especially ASEAN—figure in the Indo-Pacific balance of power; and the other security challenges faced by the region.
