Join the launch of the report, 'Ethical frameworks for deployment of Synthetic Biology in the Indo-Pacific', co-authored by members of ANU, InKlude Labs in Bengaluru, and Western Sydney University.
Synthetic Biology (SynBio) has the potential to revolutionize a wide range of fields, from altering heritable human genomes to advancing environmental conservation, industrial production, and disease treatment. As an emerging discipline with the power to reshape how the world operates, it presents significant risks of misuse, raising complex ethical challenges that demand careful governance.
Currently, the ethical oversight of SynBio is governed by a fragmented array of international agreements, laws, and regulations that are often inadequate and, in some cases, poorly monitored and enforced. Moreover, the perspectives of Indo-Pacific nations, home to over half of the global population, remain notably underrepresented in global discussions surrounding the ethical implications of SynBio.
The research, authorship, and launch of the report are critical steps in inviting and empowering broader contributions from the Indo-Pacific region. At this event, key collaborators involved in the development of the report will share their reflections and outline their visions for the way forward.
This event consists of a 35-minute panel discussion, followed by a 55-minute Q&A session.
