From Brisbane to the bush: NSC in Queensland for Community Consultations

David Bolton, NSC

As part of NSC’s Community Consultations initiative, our team travelled through south-east Queensland from 7–16 October, meeting with locals in Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Dalby and Toowoomba.

Across the region, the team heard from Queenslanders from all walks of life – community members, business leaders, charities and local governments – about the issues shaping their sense of security, risk and resilience. Discussions highlighted the impacts of recent natural disasters on community wellbeing, the growing importance of cybersecurity, and the value of social cohesion in strengthening local resilience.

A highlight of the visit was our call on the President of the Pacific Islands Council of Queensland, Ema Vueti, at Te Pasifika Haus in Brisbane, where we heard the concerns of Queensland’s Pacific Islands communities and their connections to the immediate region.

We’d like to thank everyone who made time to share their views. Each conversation helps to build a richer picture of how Australians think about national security – from local challenges to global connections.

There’s still time to have your say on key national security issues. Visit the Community Consultation portal before 30 November to share your views.

Every submission, big or small, helps shape our understanding of Australia’s security future.
