Strengthening Australia-Finland ties in security and resilience
NSC was pleased to host a high-level delegation from Finland for a roundtable on shared security priorities. The visit on 5 September highlighted the growing security partnership between Australia and Finland, bringing together policymakers, practitioners and academics to exchange perspectives on strategic challenges and the logic of democracies working together in preparedness and resilience.
Both nations share a commitment to democratic values, sovereignty and stability in the face of emerging risks. The visit also provided space to explore complementary geopolitical perspectives – from the Baltic to the Indo-Pacific. The conversations built on a recent analysis by Professor Rory Medcalf and Dr Christian Fjäder, which recommended that Australia and Finland build shared security through innovative policy dialogue and exchanges of expertise.
We thank the Finnish Embassy in Canberra, Finland’s Secretary of State to the Ministers for Foreign Affairs and Defence, Mr Pasi Rajala, and NSC’s Distinguished Advisors and Expert Associates for their valuable contributions. NSC will continue to foster trusted international relationships that strengthen collective resilience and strategic insight in Australia's national interest.
