Why we need a nationwide conversation on national security

On 22 May, Head of NSC, Professor Rory Medcalf AM, presented the 2025 Sir James Plimsoll Lecture in Hobart. This prestigious annual lecture is jointly-hosted by the University of Tasmania, the Australian Institute of International Affairs and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Professor Medcalf’s address focused on key strategic risks to Australia in the new world disorder and why it demands a more frank, inclusive and nationwide conversation.

“We can no longer afford to move cautiously or quietly as a nation in building preparedness against strategic shocks,” he said.

In his address, Professor Medcalf also launched NSC’s Community Consultations initiative

As a part of this initiative, NSC will undertake nationwide consultations to understand Australian attitudes to security. The first-of-its-kind study will inform a published report in late 2025, intended as a resource for governments, parliaments and communities.

The Community Consultations initiative will contribute to a conversation with the public, enabling Australians to share their views on national security, and help decision makers shape better informed policy.

This lecture was the centrepiece of NSC’s wider engagement in Tasmania – part of the freshly-launched Community Consultations initiative.
