On Thursday 13 February, the ANU National Security College (NSC) launched Cross currents: the new geopolitics of the Indian Ocean – the first publication from the new National Security College Press. Edited by Dr David Brewster, Dr Samuel Bashfield and Justin Burke, Cross currents brings together leading experts from Australia, India, the United States, France, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and Seychelles, and examines the shifting dynamics of the Indian Ocean and their implications for the broader Indo-Pacific.

At the launch event, Professor Rory Medcalf AM (Head of College, NSC) emphasised the growing importance of the Indian Ocean in global security, describing Cross currents as essential reading. He stated,

“This book underscores how a changing world order can learn from the multipolarity in the Indian Ocean.”

Dr David Brewster, the book’s co-editor and a Senior Research Fellow at NSC, emphasised the significance of this publication in understanding the shifting geopolitics in the region

“[There is a] need to establish new coalitions with non-traditional partners, where interests may coincide.”

He also spoke about the “adverse impact of strategic competition” and how it affects smaller powers in the Indian Ocean.

With contributions from some of the world’s foremost experts on Indo-Pacific security, Cross currents is an essential resource for policymakers, scholars, and security professionals.

The College is grateful for the support of the Department of Defence in funding this project through the Strategic Policy Grants Program.
