About the publication and project

Australia's 2023 Defence Strategic Review confirmed the north-east Indian Ocean as a priority region for Australia's defence engagement. This includes Australia working with countries such as Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Maldives to enhance regional maritime security.

Since early 2024, a team of experts from the ANU National Security College has been working with the Bangladesh government to assess Bangladesh's maritime domain awareness (MDA) capabilities. This involved understanding Bangladesh's unique maritime security challenges and needs, as well as the roles of multiple government agencies with responsibilities in the maritime domain.

This NSC report, Governing Bangladesh’s maritime space: an assessment of Bangladesh’s maritime challenges and maritime domain awareness capabilities, was recently presented to the Bangladesh government and includes recommendations on ways in which Bangladesh's MDA can be enhanced.
