Asher joined the ANU National Security College (NSC) in June 2026 on secondment from the Department of Defence, bringing extensive experience across Australia’s national security, intelligence, and Defence sectors. 

Across a 16-year career in Australia’s national security sector, Asher has worked at the Department of Defence, the Office of National Intelligence, Home Affairs, and the Attorney-General’s Department. As a Director, and acting-Assistant Secretary, Asher has led decision support to consequential Defence capability investments in the air, land, joint and ICT domains. He has also held intelligence analyst roles across multiple portfolios, with a focus on counter-terrorism, transnational and serious organised crime and border threats.

Asher holds a Master of Strategic Studies (with Merit) from the Australian National University, a Bachelor of International Studies from Deakin University, and a Bachelor of Arts (Criminology) from the University of Melbourne.
