Associate Professor Lauren Sanders CSC

Dr Lauren Sanders, CSC, is an Adjunct Associate Professor with the TC Beirne School of Law at The University of Queensland, an Adjunct Senior Lecturer with the University of Adelaide Law School and a member of the Deakin University’s Centre for Protection of Civilians. She is a Director of the Justice and Accountability Network Australia, and of the Asia-Pacific Institute for Law and Security; and also teaches at the ANU National Security College in civil-military relations. 

Dr Sanders’ current research focus is on weapons law, specifically relevant to emerging and novel technologies; encompassing their design, development, trade and use. Her broader research and teaching interests focus upon international humanitarian law and accountability. She is the editor of Law and Future of War podcast where she interviews experts in the fields of law and emerging and disruptive technology, military strategy and military affairs.

She has two and a half decades of experience with the Australian Defence Force, advising upon the application of laws of armed conflict, including during military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq and domestic counter-terrorism. She has also been engaged as an expert consultant for the United Nations on matters relating to the Conventional Weapons Convention and novel weapons technologies.
