Dr Ketty W. Chen
Dr Ketty Chen is the Country Representative and head of the National Democratic Institute in Taiwan.
Previously she was the Vice President of the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy (TFD), where she was responsible for overseeing international affairs and general administration at the TFD.
Dr Chen is also a member of the board for the Prospect Foundation and the Director of Research for the Association of Public Issues and Studies. Additionally, she served as the Chairperson of Liberal International’s Human Rights Committee’s Women’s Rights Working Group. Dr Chen recently joined the National Bureau of Asian Research as a member of its board of advisors.
A political scientist by training, Dr Chen received her doctoral degree in political science from the University of Oklahoma, specialising in comparative politics, democratisation, international relations and political philosophy. Dr Chen also holds two Master’s degrees in political science and international relations from the University of Oklahoma and dual Bachelor of Arts degrees in political science and psychology from the Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. Her writing has appeared in Nikkei Asian Review, China File and the Prospect Journal. Dr Chen has been referenced in publications and international media outlets such as The Wall Street Journal, the Associated Press, Al Jazeera, LA Times, New York Times, Financial Times, BBC, and Le Monde.
She has contributed chapters to the books Taiwan’s Social Movements Under Ma Ying-jeou, Cities Unsilenced and Taiwan in Dynamic Transition: Nation Building and Democratization. Her article Combating Beijing's Sharp Power - Taiwan's Democracy Under Fire was published in the July 2022 issue of the Journal of Democracy. She was also a contributor to the book, Defending Democracy in an Age of Sharp Power, published in 2023.
