Rowan Callick OBE

Rowan Callick is an experienced journalist with extensive China and other Indo-Pacific expertise. He is an Industry Fellow at Griffith University’s Asia Institute.

Rowan grew up in England, graduating BA Honours from Exeter University and working for a daily newspaper before 10 years in Papua New Guinea, managing a publishing group. After migrating to Australia, he became China Correspondent for the Australian Financial Review and – twice – for The Australian, and was Asia-Pacific Editor for each paper.

He is a member of the advisory board of the Centre for Contemporary Chinese Studies at Melbourne University, and vice-chair of the Australia Taiwan Business Council. He was appointed an Honorary Fellow of the Australian Institute for International Affairs, has won two Walkley Awards, and was Australian Journalist of the Year. He received the OBE on the recommendation of the PNG Government in 2015.

He has written three books on contemporary China, including Party Time: Who Runs China And How (published internationally by Palgrave Macmillan as The Party Forever: Inside China’s Modern Communist Elite).
